Dr Sonali Shah (Sociology and Social Policy) and Prof. Mick Wallis (Performance and Cultural Industries) were awarded a grant by the Economic and Research Council for a drama-based, one-year follow-on project enhancing the impact of previous research funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

July 2011

Congratualations to all our students who graduated in this month's degree ceremonies, and especially to Beatriz Miranda, Maria Berghs, Tom Campbell and Chris Till who received their doctoral degrees.

The School of Law hosted an open meeting, organised by the Leeds Independent Disability Council, to discuss and challenge media and government portrayals of disabled people.

Visitors to the Centre included Mónika Tóth, on a student study visit from the Institute for Art Theory and Media Studies of ELTE, Budapest (Hungary)

June 2011

Dr Alison Sheldon was elected as the new Director of the Centre, to commence in September. Prof. Mark Priestley will take up a position as Head of School for Sociology and Social Policy.

Dr Sonali Shah is leading a knowledge transfer project, funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund, translating research findings to support the professional development of staff from Leeds City Council's Disabled Children's team.

Welcome to Vicky Scott, who joins the Centre on a five-week student internship, funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund, to assist with work on public impact outputs associated with the ANED website.

May 2011

Anna Lawson presented a plenary address at the 11th Conference of the Nordic Network on Disability Research (NNDR) in Reykjavic (Iceland). Jill Edwards and Sarah Woodin also presented papers to the conference.

Members of CDS were amongst those who joined with thousands of disabled people and their allies for a major demonstration in London in response to concerns over austerity cuts to benefits and services.

April 2011

Sonali Shah and Mark Priestley published a new book - Disability and Social Change: private lives and public policies, based on a three-year project funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

Mark Priestley and Anna Lawson travelled to Brussels (Belgium) for the Scientific Board meeting of the Academic Network of European Disability experts (ANED). Several new country reports are now published on the website, which has now been updated with translated content in French and German.

Mark Priestley addressed the High Level Conference on 'New Challenges in the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020' hosted by the Hungarian EU Presidency in Budapest.

March 2011

Two guest seminars this month included Dr Jenny Morris on 'Independent living and government policy: triumph or tragedy?' and Stephen Marsh QC on 'DDA. RIP. What Next? Rights and Disabled People'.

Mark Priestley presented ongoing research from the ANED project to the EU Disability High Level Group in Brussels.

Five members of CDS joined with research teams from 29 European countries and policy makers from the European Commission at the third annual meeting of the Academic Network of European Disability experts (ANED).

Stuart Murray (English) co-edited a special issue of the Journal of Literary & Cultural Disability Studies on 'Disabling Postcolonialism', exploring the intersections of Disability Studies and Postcolonial Studies.

September 2010

A warm welcome to all our new postgraduate students.

Colin Barnes and Alison Sheldon (Sociology and Social Policy) visited the Research Center for Ars Vivendi at Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto, Japan) to present an invited series of lectures and seminars on disability studies to Japanese and Korean students.

Angharad Beckett hosted a collaborative conference on 'The Child' and 'Childhood' in Theory and Policy, attended by 60 delegates and including themes on disability and childhood.
