July 2010

Congratulations to all of our students who received their degrees in the University's summer graduation ceremonies.

Ray Holt (Engineering) and Angharad Beckett (Sociology and Social Policy) were awarded a Leverhulme grant on'Designing for Inclusive Play: facilitating meaningful play between disabled and non-disabled children'.

CDS will be partners in a major new EU FP7research award in 2011 to establish an Initial Training Network on 'Disability Rights Expanding Accessible Markets' (DREAM), involving international academic and industrial collaborators, co-ordinated by the Universty of Ireland Galway. Two research assistants/trainees will be appointed in the School of Sociology and Sociology.

June 2010

CDS were partners in a successful tender to the European Fundamental Rights Agency for research on the 'Fundamental Rights of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and Persons with Mental Health Problems', in collaboration with the National University of Ireland Galway and the Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC), co-ordinated by Human European Consultancy. Anna Lawson, Mark Priestley and Sarah Woodin will participate in the new project.

Angelo Marra (visiting research fellow) published a new book, arising from his research Diritto e disability studies [Law and Disability Studies, in Italian].

A revised second edition of Exploring Disability: a sociological introduction is now available.

This month's guest seminar featured two presentations from Prof Anne Waldschmidt (University of Cologne, Germany) on 'Critical Disability Studies – a German perspective', and Dr Cristóbal Miralles Insa (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain) on 'Making worplaces accessible through Universal Design'.

Welcome to Randall Owen, who joins the Centre as a visiting doctoral student from the disability studies programme at Chicago Illinois (USA) and Pey-Chun Pan (Chung Cheng University, Chia-yi, Taiwan) who joins the Centre as a visiting research fellow for one year. ,

Welcome to Prof Anne Waldschmidt (University of Cologne, Germany) who joins the Centre as a visiting research fellow for two months.

Bassey Ebenso (University of Leeds) presented this month's seminar on 'Life-course perspectives on leprosy-related stigma: insights into processes of stigmatization and disability causation in Western Nigeria'.

Colin Barnes hosted a screening and discussion of Tod Browning's film Freaks.

Welcome to Dr Cristóbal Miralles Insa (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain) who joins the Centre as a visiting research fellow for three months (in the School of Engineering).

Karen Beauchamp-Pryor (University of Swansea) presented a guest seminar entitled 'The participation of disabled students in higher education policy and provision: 'If they are going to consult, then they have to really listen''

February 2010

The Disability Equality in English Primary Schools (DEEPS) project was featured in the Spring Edition of Economic and Social Research Council's Society Now magazine.

A new book was published in the Disability Press series - Closing the Book on the Big E: An autobiographical tale of a disabled man, John Swain, available in multiple formats from our online bookstore.

John Fuller (Strategic Policy Director, Independent Living Fund) presented this month's guest seminar on ‘The Independent Living Fund - supporting disabled people in the 21st century’

January 2010

Findings from the Evaluation of Provision and Support for Disabled Students in Higher Education were published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Welcome to Vasi Stamatin, who joins the Centre as a visiting PhD student for six months from Babes-Bolyai University (Romania), and Miriam Conejo, who comes also as a visiting PhD student for three months from University of Barcelona (Spain).

December 2009

Congratulations to all of our Disability MA students who graduate this month.

Representatives from 27 countries joined European Commission staff for the second annual meeting of the ANED network. Mark Priestley (Sociology and Social Policy) presented ANED evidence on employment policies to the European Economic and Social Committee, and made a plenary speech on independent living to the European Day of Disabled People conference in Brussels.

Sonali Shah (Sociology and Social Policy) hosted a dissemination conference combining themes from the AHRC Beyond Text workshop project and the 'Time of Our Lives' project.

Shaun Grech (Manchester Metropolitan University) presented this month's guest seminar on 'Disability, International Development and the Majority world: critical concerns for a global disability studies'.

November 2009

Mark Priestley, Sarah Woodin and Anna Lawson attended the second annual meeting of the Academic Network of European Disability experts (ANED) in Brussels.

A new report was published for the Office for Disability Issues assessing research evidence in support of the UK Government's Independent Living Strategy. Sarah Woodin (Sociology and Social Policy) and Bryan Matthews (Transport Studies) presented the findings to the ODI Evidence Day in London.

Dr Alison Wilde (Univeristy of York) presented this month's guest seminar: 'Who do we want to be? Disability, impairment and cultural representation'

October 2009

A short video called 'Performing Lives' was produced, highlighting process and findings from the AHRC Beyond Text workshops

Dr Bill Armer (University of Leeds) presented this month's seminar on 'A Developing Social Conscience, or Applied Eugenics? A brief overview of selected UK social policies since 1902'

Welcome to David Shannon (Law), Holly Jones (Behavioural Sciences), Linzi Carlin and Gordon Cardona (Sociology and Social Policy) who join the centre as doctoral research candidates.

September 2009

Welcome to Professor Masatsugu Hori, Kumamoto Gakuen University (Japan) who joins the Centre as a visiting research fellow for 12 months, and Marianne Woolven, Université Lyon 2 ( France) as a visiting research student for three months.

Key findings from the ESRC-funded project Disability Equality in English Primary Schools were reported in an article in Disability Now.

Visitors to the Centre included Yumika Shirase, National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (Japan).
